Klerksdorp is a city located in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the North West Province. This city was established in 1837 on the banks of the Schoonspruit River. Klerksdorp was founded by Voortrekkers and named after Jacob de Clerq. Many prospectors descended on Klerksdorp in 1886 after the discovery of gold in the area. Today this city’s economy is thriving thanks to its mining and agricultural industry. The majority of the city’s population speaks Afrikaans. Klerksdorp is an important producer of maize, sorghum, groundnuts and sunflower for the country.
